The Portage River Walk in Oak Harbor has been a community dream for more than two decades, and will finally become reality with a $500,000 grant announced in December. This drawing was created more than 20 years ago to promote the construction of a downtown river walk in the village.

Funding for a riverwalk project in the Village of Oak Harbor has been included in the state capital improvement budget.
Mayor Quinton Babcock said the village and the Oak Harbor Development Group have been informed that $500,000 has been allocated for the project.
“This will go a long way towards making our vision a reality,” the mayor said.
Preliminary cost estimates for the project are in the $2 million range, he said.
Last year, village officials garnered support for state funding by asking residents, businesses, civic groups and others to write letters to state legislators. ....

Oak Harbor’s dream of creating a walkable riverfront, an idea that dates back more than two decades, just became infinitely more feasible with the passing of the 2021-2022 Ohio Capital Budget, which included a generous $500,000 line item for Oak Harbor’s waterfront improvements.
The biannual capital budget, which funds permanent improvements throughout the state, recognizes community projects with high impact and strong public support.
The funding is the direct result of the coordinated efforts and determination of the Oak Harbor Development Group (OHDG) and the Village of Oak Harbor to incorporate a proposed river walk along the Portage River. ....
