Organization: Oak Ridge should tackle disability issues, ETHRA service

A local organization is calling for the city of Oak Ridge to be more accessible to people who have mobility issues, as well as requesting better transportation services.
Members of the group, the Transportation and Mobility Committee of Strong and United, spoke to the Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission on Thursday. Strong and United is a local organization that has been discussing various Oak Ridge issues.
Member Marian Wildgruber, accompanied by her service dog Farrah, gave a presentation.
There s a lot of people in Oak Ridge that would be out and about if they could be, Wildgruber said.
She recommended the city invest more money for crosswalks, sidewalks and signals to help people living with disabilities travel in Oak Ridge more easily. She described the current sidewalks as crumbling and unsafe. ....

The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge invites the community to join its virtual gathering of Lunch with the League at noon Tuesday, March 2.
The speaker will be Wayne Blasius, director of the Oak Ridge Community Development Department. Guests are invited to access the Zoom presentation by following instructions provided at the close of this article.

Blasius grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and adopted East Tennessee as his home in 1977. Prior to coming to Oak Ridge, he led the nonprofit East Tennessee Community Design Center from 2014 to 2017 and served as president of the InSite Development Corporation from 2001 to 2015 where he completed major downtown Knoxville historic rehabs such as the Phoenix and Mast General Store and Gallery Lofts.
