SHAWNEE A cowgirl from Alaska stirs a lot of attention at rodeos.
Most competitors are from places that are synonymous with the rodeo life, states such as Texas, Oklahoma and Wyoming.
Barrel racer and breakaway roper Laura Haight is from Kodiak, Alaska, and people can’t help but take additional interest in cowboys and cowgirls from Alaska.
“We get asked a lot of weird questions,” Haight said. “One was like, Do we have pet polar bears? ”
Haight,16, is currently traveling all over the United States competing in rodeos and competed this past week in the International Finals Youth Rodeo in Shawnee, which concluded Friday night.

Shawnee EM offers situation report Thursday
ONG: Nothing to report.
OG&E: Southwest Power Pool is no longer under an energy emergency alert. Due to continuing high loads and other implications of severe cold weather, it remains in a period of conservative operations until 10pm, Feb 20, for the entire SPP balancing authority area.
Streets: Plow trucks have been working their route accordingly. Each truck has to stop at the City Garage for maintenance and to change out the blade on the plow daily.
Utilities: Crews have been working non-stop to fix every main break that comes up. Yesterday there was a large water main break in the 1600 block of North Park that significantly affected the water supply. Close communication with the Hospital Facilities Director, Shawnee EM, City Manager, and the Public Works Director to ensure there were no urgent requests and that everyone had what they needed for their area of responsibility. ONG: At 0755 hrs, Significant gas leak on MacArthur west of Timbers Blvd. Shawnee Fire will remain on scene until work is completed for safety reasons. Shawnee Police blocked the road for thru traffic until Streets department came out and barricaded the road. This call was completed at 1222 hrs.
OG&E: Per Oklahoma Corporation Commission, SPP has lifted shed load order. Power being restored to those who have been interrupted, please continue to share conservation messaging.
Streets: Currently working 4 main breaks and have completed 12 repairs to date. Snow routes are passable and continue to be worked in preparation for the next round. Our levels on salt/sand are stable at this time.
