UW program will teach for-credit college courses in Wisconsin prisons

MADISON, Wis. Wisconsin inmates with a hunger for knowledge and a desire to dip into the world of college education will now have more access to do so.
The University of Wisconsin– Madison’s Odyssey Beyond Bars Program received a $300,000 grant from the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation to teach college courses in Wisconsin prisons.
The program was created 18 years ago as a humanities jumpstart course for low income families who want to continue education and recently entered the prison system to expand their educational opportunities. Odyssey Beyond Bars teaches for-credit and noncredit UW Madison courses. The first for-credit course, English 100, was taught by Odyssey’s Co-Director Kevin Mullen. ....

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Odyssey Project received a $300,000 grant from the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation to continue teaching college courses to incarcerated people in Wisconsin through the Odyssey Beyond Bars program.

The funding of $100,000 over the next three years will support a pilot project that will deliver introductory college courses in English to incarcerated students who are interested in post-secondary education but are not yet enrolled in a credential-granting program. The project will also explore the potential for offering similar introductory courses in math.
“As someone working in Wisconsin’s criminal justice system for 37 years, I believe Odyssey Beyond Bars’ early results in providing a college ‘jump-start’ to incarcerated students have been impressive,” says retired Madison Chief of Police Noble Wray, who sits on the Renn ....

Oakhill prison officer charged with sexual assault, smuggling contraband for sale by inmate

A correctional officer at a state prison in Fitchburg was charged Thursday with smuggling contraband into prison for sale and with sexual assault for an alleged relationship with her inmate business partner, court records state.
A criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court alleges Mariah S. Krienke, 36, of Janesville, brought cellphones, chewing tobacco, food and nutritional supplements into Oakhill Correctional Institution to be sold for her by an inmate, with Krienke and the inmate splitting the proceeds.
The scheme, which several inmates interviewed by police said they were aware of, was discovered by Oakhill officials after they received an anonymous tip that an inmate had a cellphone, which is prohibited at the minimum-security prison. ....
