By Toh Han Shih In the second volume of his biography, former Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong revealed his soft spot for two former stalwarts of the ruling Peopleâs Action Party (PAP), the late Ong Teng Cheong and Dr Tan Cheng Bock, even though these two men opposed the PAP after leaving the party. In the book, Standing Tall, Mr Goh expressed warmth and admiration for these two men whom he called friends, in contrast to his dislike for opposition politicians Chee Soon Juan and Tang Liang Hong. The book, which details Mr Gohâs tenure as Prime Minister from 1990 to 2004, hit the bookstores earlier in May. It is a sequel to the first volume, Tall Order, which covered Mr Gohâs youth, working life and earlier political career. ....
- Advertisement - In the second part of his two-volume memoirs, former PM Goh Chok Tong spoke about two persons close to him whose political careers had been a fascinating part of Singaporeâs political history. His attempts to bring some light to some questions surrounding Ong Teng Cheong and Dr Tan Cheng Bock are hardly satisfactory. His memoirs â Tall Order and Standing Tall (the second volume just out) â represented the best opportunity for him to speak his mind on what happened, now that he is out of office for so long and in the twilight of his years. His words would have helped clear some of the toxic cobweb surrounding the fates of Ong and Dr Tan. But, regrettably, he either ducked the issues or, for lack of a better word, whitewashed them. ....
