Unless you’ve been very committed to keeping your head in the sand, you’ve probably noticed we’re in the midst of an opioid epidemic. Though there is little evidence that the one or two doses of IV opioid medications EMS might give for acute pain contribute to opioid misuse, there are other reasons to have multiple analgesia options in our toolbox. Perhaps patients don’t want an opioid because they are in recovery or fear addiction. Maybe a patient had adverse reactions to opioids in the past, or perhaps other types of medications just work better for them. Regardless, it might be time to consider adding an IV nonopioid medication to our protocols. ....

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â Overdose deaths in Kent County are on track to be on par or potentially outpace the numbers of 2019 and 2018.
Medical professionals say the pandemic has prompted some to turn to drugs and alcohol, with isolation proving to be a main factor in substance use disorders over the past year.
Right now in our community we are seeing an increase in substance use disorders. We re seeing an increase in rates of substance use of both in opioids and alcohol we can point to that more easily, said Dr. Cara Poland, Medical Director of Addiction Medicine at Spectrum Health and Assistant Professor at Michigan State University. ....

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The opioid crisis has been affecting the lives of millions of Americans for quite some time, but newly released research from Mayo Clinic has revealed the crisis has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic with an increase in substance abuse and overdoses.
“It’s everywhere and people just sometimes don’t want to see it whether they’re just ignoring it or maybe they don’t know,” said Kaitlyn Nelson, Recovery Advocate Lead at House of Hope in Mankato. ....

Pandemic stress is also considered a contributing factor to the number of homicides during the unprecedented year.
Chicago police also released the final crime number for 2020 Friday which showed that shootings and murders jumped up by more than 50% in 2020.
In 2020, there were 769 murders, up considerably compared to the 495 murders tallied in 2019.
As for shootings, the city logged 3,261 last year, a big jump from 2,140 shootings in 2019. The number of shooting victims climbed to 4,033 in 2020, up from 2,598 in 2019.
