How the Legislature Responded to COVID-19

The National Assembly, last week, received a research work on legislative responses to COVID-19, which chronicled Assembly’s preparedness for emergencies. Udora Orizu reports An international non-governmental organisation, Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), in collaboration with Young Parliamentarians Forum (YPF) of the National Assembly on March 31,presented a report on a study conducted on legislative responses to COVID-19 in Nigeria. The report, titled: ‘Legislative Responses to COVID-19 in Nigeria’, threw light on the weaknesses, preparedness and strategies for emergencies in the thirty six States’ Houses of Assembly and the National Assembly. It also offered opportunities for improvement and how to prepare for the next similar emergency.

Minimum wage amendment bill: NLC threatens indefinite strike

Daily Post Nigeria Published The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, has disclosed that the organized labour will embark on an indefinite strike if the bill to change the law on minimum wage is allowed to pass. The bill sponsored by Garba Datti, which has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives has been referred to the House Committee on constitutional amendment. The bill seeks to move the minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent legislative list. The implication is that the state governments will determine the minimum wage. “Those sponsoring this bill are the ones instigating crisis. NLC is against this bill. Whatever incentive that has been brought, they should change their minds and stand with the people.
