Despite Setbacks And Theft, Coos Bay's Coalbank Village Opens Doors To Homeless

1:02
KLCC s Brian Bull reports on a new transitional housing site in Coos Bay, that has dealt with setbacks and even vandalism and theft prior to opening.
The units are compact and secure spaces for either couples or individuals.  Tara Johnson, executive director of the non-profit Devereaux Center, said she and Coos Bay officials have worked to get this project off the ground to help the estimated 1200 to 1500 homeless people in the area.
Johnson told KLCC that with Coalbank Village now open, she’s enjoyed seeing how happy people are to have a place to call home.

Coos Bay Transitional Shelter To Use Innovative New Approach

/
Like many communities in the region, the housing market in Coos Bay has been tightening for years, leaving a growing number of people without homes. In response, local organizations are working to build a village of small, manufactured living structures as temporary shelter.
The shelter site, inspired by the urban campground in Medford, will be able to house around 20 people at a time.
Tara Johnson is the director of The Devereux Center, an organization in Coos Bay that provides resources for houseless people. She hopes this project will fill in gaps left by the area’s limited shelter options.
“I think that people understand that if we don’t do anything about the homeless situation, then in five years we’re still going to be right where we’re at, says Johnson. So this may not be the perfect solution, but it is a solution, and it’s worth trying.” ....

Nonprofit seeks volunteers during Curry County expansion

Children in need along the South Coast could get a boost if there are volunteers to do it.
A regional nonprofit is looking for local volunteers in Curry County to help speak for children in painful family situations as the organization tries to rebuild operations in the county.
The volunteers are called CASAs — or court-appointed special advocates — and they work with children facing instability at home.
“There’s a missing person — a missing advocate — when you don’t have a CASA on board,” said Greg Dalton, the program director for CASA of Coos and Curry Counties.
Whereas an attorney for a foster child has to advocate for whatever a child wants, and a state case worker is bound by certain agency requirements, Dalton’s trained volunteers give the judge their outside perspective about a child’s best interest, he said. What’s more, a CASA typically only assists one child or family, while attorneys and case workers ....
