Claudia Kay Montague Widmer, 72, cherished wife, mother, Nana and friend died at her home in Ontario, OR on June 13, 2021 after a short battle with metastatic breast cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Claudia was born February 25, 1949 in Tacoma, WA to Lloyd Montague and Blanche Peterson. She was the only child of their union. Her early years were spent in WA and AK as Lloyd was stationed there. Blanche and Claudia moved to Vale, OR in the mid 1950’s to care for Blanche’s aging parents. She graduated from Vale Union H.S. in 1967, then went to TVCC in Ontario before transferring to Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, OR where she completed her bachelor’s degree in English with her teaching certificate in 1971. She completed her student teaching at North Salem High School in Salem, OR then taught her 1st full year 1971-1972 at North Marion High School in Aurora, OR where she taught English, Drama, and Speech. Jefferson County School District 509-J Board members have selected their top three candidates for the superintendent position. Two candidates are leaders at Oregon colleges, and the third is from a Washington school district.
This week, the board of directors will begin conducting final candidate interviews with three superintendent finalists, Jay Mathisen, Dan Koopman and Jeffry Davis.
The district will host three public events for the community to meet the candidates. The first event is Tuesday evening, March 2 with Mathisen. A second event will be Wednesday evening, March 3 for the public to meet Koopman, and the final event is Thursday evening, March 4 for the community to meet Davis. ....

Marian Wallis Fitts


Marian Fitts, 66, of Monmouth died on Nov. 28, 2020.
Marian was born in Salem, Oregon on Aug. 3, 1954. She graduated from Central High School in 1972 and attended Oregon College of Education (now WOU). She then married and moved to Nuremberg, Germany where her son, Arron Randall Boham was born in 1976. Returning to Oregon and the Monmouth/Independence area to raise her son, she later married her husband Robert D. Fitts and recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary.
Life was busy for Marian as she was always taking care of her family, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was known as Tante’ (German for Aunt) and loved spending time with children; she was like a second mom to many. Over the years Marian had a variety of careers including her first job at Jim Smith Realty, Insurance Companies, the State of Oregon, the Oregon Marionberry Commission and Windermere Commercial Real Estate. Being an entrepreneur and a love of flowers, she opened Rainbow ....
