Pamplin Media Group - Oregon secretary of state details her to-do list of audits

Unemployment claims, vaccine rollout and emergency systems are on her agenda.
Secretary of State Shemia Fagan has laid out an ambitious plan for state audits during her first year in office.
The to-do list for the state Audits Division covers aspects of the coronavirus pandemic, the resulting economic downturn and the Labor Day wildfires — all issues that have arisen in the past year — and several other issues.
Fagan, a former Democratic state senator, was elected Nov. 3 to the position vacated by Republican appointee Bev Clarno. Clarno completed the balance of the elected term of Republican Dennis Richardson, who died of cancer in February 2019, but she did not seek a full term.

Executive director of Unite Oregon appointed to fill spot vacated by Secretary of State Shemia Fagan
Commissioners representing Multnomah and Clackamas counties unanimously cast votes to approve Kayse Jama as the next state senator to represent District 24, covering portions of east Portland and northern Clackamas County.
"The magnitude of this moment is not lost on me," Jama said. "My journey from a nomadic community in Somalia to the Oregon Senate is a testament to where I come from, the people of our district, and our shared values."
Jama — executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Unite Oregon — will join Oregon's legislative assembly ahead of a session that is expected to take aim at advancing issues of racial justice and fixing systemic inequities further exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pamplin Media Group - Statewide officials take their oaths across Oregon

Statewide officials take their oaths across Oregon
Pandemic spreads out ceremonies normally conducted at the Capitol in Salem.
Three Oregon statewide officials took their oaths for four-year terms Monday, Jan. 4, in ceremonies spread out across the state during the coronavirus pandemic.
The pandemic resulted in alternatives to the usual ceremonies on the first Monday in January at the Capitol in Salem.
Secretary of State Shemia Fagan, the newest statewide official, chose the steps of Dufur School for her swearing in by Wasco County Judge Janet Stauffer, who lives in Dufur.
As a fourth-grade student, Fagan was encouraged by her teacher to join an after-school chess club, which eventually led her to win a state chess championship and turn her life around. She and two brothers were raised by their father in a one-parent household, while their mother struggled with addiction and homelessness in Portland.

Pamplin Media Group - Outgoing secretary of state adds chapters to her public life

Outgoing secretary of state adds chapters to her public life
Bev Clarno spent years as a legislator, federal appointee and county commissioner.
When Bev Clarno published her memoir four years ago, she figured her public life was long over.
She was one of just two people — and the only woman — to lead Republicans in both chambers of the Oregon Legislature. She was a presidential appointee to a federal agency and served one year as a Deschutes County commissioner, which allowed her to stay close to home near Redmond.
Entering her 80s, she had had four children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren — and she intended her memoir, "From Pigs to Politics," to tell her story and to inspire them.
