Lake County restoration initiative receives nearly $2 million
WASHINGTON (KTVZ) Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., announced Friday that over $5.2 million in federal resources from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership are headed to Oregon’s Lake County All Lands Restoration Initiative and the Buttes to Basins All Lands Forest Resiliency Project in Jefferson and Deschutes counties to support critical forest restoration and maintenance efforts.
“Last year’s catastrophic wildfire season is a powerful example of why forest management projects are vital to the health and well-being of our communities,” said Merkley, who serves on both Senate Appropriations subcommittees that fund this program. “I’m pleased that Lake, Jefferson and Deschutes counties are receiving these critical federal resources to boost resiliency in some of Oregon’s most wildfire-prone areas. New state report finds lower pesticide levels, improved water quality
SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) A new interagency report shows a drop in pesticide levels in a majority of watersheds across Oregon, as monitored by a coalition of state agencies.
The finding is contained in the 2017-19 Biennium Report, which looks at pesticide levels in selected streams in various parts of Oregon.
The report is authored by an interagency water quality management team making up Oregon’s Pesticide Stewardship Partnership. The program has been working to reduce the levels of pesticides in watersheds through voluntary partnerships.
Their report is based on more than 1,000 surface water samples collected and analyzed for 129 pesticide compounds, including 57 herbicides, 40 insecticides, 10 fungicides and 16 pesticide concentrations. ....

Human-made beaver dams likely save natural wetland from extinction

A natural wetland in southeast Oregon was likely saved from extinction thanks to four years of collaboration and some human-made beaver dams.
In the Oregon high desert, about seven miles northeast of the town of Crane, Alder Creek bubbles to the surface surrounded by sagebrush and juniper trees.
The creek and wetland create an actual oasis in one of the driest and most remote sections of the state, said Ken Diebel with the Malheur Watershed Council, a chief BLM partner on the project.

Erosion Risks High In Areas Scorched By Oregon Wildfires

KLCC s Brian Bull reports on erosion risks in areas hit by the 2020 wildfires, and what s being done to help offset the problem.
A new report by the Erosion Threat Assessment/Reduction Team (ETART) looked at several recent major wildfires. This includes the Holiday Farm Fire which consumed 173,000 acres, and cost $42 million to suppress. Most of the affected areas now have “high” to “very high” erosion risk, which increases the chance of landslides.
Renee Davis of the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board was part of an ETART media panel. She said rehabilitation efforts are underway to reduce the risk.
“Mulching to keep in place soil that otherwise would be at risk. Also some early seeding to get some vegetation re-established. Then as we move into coming spring, very intense replanting efforts with saplings, ultimately growing into some of the forest we lost during this fire season.” ....
