Overview
From rolling benchlands to the granite outcrops of the Greenhorn Mountains, the rugged North Fork John Day Wilderness provides an abundance of natural diversity. The wilderness is known primarily for its big game (Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer) and its anadromous fish habitat. There are over 130 miles of perennial streams, 40 miles of which provide spawning habitat for Chinook salmon and steelhead. ....

On his way out the congressional door, Greg Walden surprisingly proclaimed his environmental accomplishments, from supporting Mount Hood wilderness, the Steens Mountain Protection Act enacted over 20 years ago and removal of the Savage Rapids and Chiloquin dams (“Reflecting on 30 years of public service,” Jan. 3). He neglected to mention his longstanding opposition to the removal of the Klamath River dams, despite their lacking the navigation and flood control benefits he touted, and despite support for dam removal by the federal licensee, PacifiCorp.
Walden also failed to mention his opposition to the efforts of both Oregon’s senators to protect the Owyhee Canyonlands and his consistent support for increased logging of federal forests at the expense of environmental laws and public participation. He depicted himself as a moderate environmentalist, despite a lifetime League of Conser ....
