The last quarter of the year is often considered “the giving season.” It’s a time when people think about the various charities they like and want to support. It is also the time when most charities send out their annual appeals. This year is no different. Yet, it is. Many charities canceled traditional fundraising events. Others had to close their doors to visitors. Still others took on greater needs without corresponding increases in revenue or funding.
I have worked in the world on nonprofits for more than 25 years, specifically in the field of fundraising. One of the most difficult gifts to secure is the unrestricted gift, yet it is the most essential to the operations of the charities we love. Increasingly donors want to direct their giving or will expect that every penny they donate goes directly to “the cause” and not administration. And therein lies the conundrum. ....

If there was a list of dirty words for the nonprofit sector, overhead would likely be number one on the list. In spite of efforts like The Overhead Myth, it can still be a source of frustration for nonprofit employees and executives yet donors still seem to be hung up on the phrase.
The authors surveyed 1,801 people people who donated within the past five years. In a series of 37 questions, donors were randomly assigned to four different scenarios in which organizations’ mission information remained the same but spending varied on program and overhead. In one scenario, donors are presented with two disaster relief organizations where overhead ratios are low for both but one focuses on immediate relief while the other on long-term recovery. Other scenarios presented donors with a choice between a charity with lower overhead and another with higher overhead, another omitted any references to overhead, ....
