Longtime Franklin County GOP leader Brad Sinnott died Saturday.

He turned 60 this month.
Friends and colleagues remembered his kindness, his dry sense of humor, his “steady hand at the wheel” as part of the elections board, and his impact politically and in the legal profession.
“He gave sage advice,” said David Payne, deputy director of the county board of elections, who first met Sinnott more than 30 years ago. “He was a great legal mind, he was a great political mind.”
Josh Jaffe, chairman of the Franklin County Republican Party Executive Committee, called Sinnott a practical conservative who has had an enormous impact on Republican politics in this state and in central Ohio for decades… He’s been one of the people who has shaped Ohio Republican politics over the last 40 years.” ....

There was a time when Ohioans experiencing mental health crises could get help that was less likely to intersect with the criminal justice system. In past decades, a state-run local hospital, for instance, was able to evaluate and offer both short- and long-term mental health treatment, if necessary.
That designated local mental hospital no longer exists, and today experts say the system is lacking. Now, with few other options, family members or bystanders often who have few options end up calling police for help. Worse, untreated behavior can lead to criminal acts.
Sadly, incarcerating those suffering from severe mental illness can lead to a repetitive cycle of similar behavior and imprisonment. It can include a revolving door of emergency hospitalization, homelessness, repeated police encounters, committing crimes just for a place to stay in jail, a whirlwind of judges and courtrooms, lapses in treatment all with mental anguish for the individuals and ....

Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene says the Mahoning County jail is the largest mental health facility in the county.
“When we have 500 inmates, we know that one third of those inmates are on some type of psychotropic meds,” he said.
“We started realizing: Where are these people going to go when they get released? Where is their next meal going to come from? Who is going to give them their meds? These are all things that weren’t thought about before.”
Interventions through community partnerships can stop the endless cycle, and find more appropriate places to treat and house them than jail, Greene said. ....

People in the throes of a mental health crisis often intersect with the criminal justice system, and while efforts are being made to increase the availability of mental health services, observers say existing systems are still lacking.
When people with mental health issues become involved with the justice system, it often can be during an episode involving crisis behavior. Or, the person has a repetitive history of similar behavior.
Sometimes the behavior itself is not criminal, but causes alarm in family members or bystanders who have few options but to call for police or an ambulance; other times, the behavior leads to criminal acts. ....
