OU Health Announces Initiatives To Strengthen Nursing Workforce Amid Shortage

Health care facilities around the nation have been facing a nursing shortage and the pandemic has strained it even more. OU Health said they are no exception to the shortage.
As far as opportunities for nurses it is like the wild, wild west and seeing nurses leave for heavy incentives sometimes it is hard to blame them with that much money going around, said James Brigida, a RN and Supervisor of OU Health s Emergency Department.
In Oklahoma, the Federal Bureau of Health Workforce has noted the state has 44,200 nurses which translates to 11.1 nurses per 1,000 people. And across OU Health s hospitals, there is a 19% nursing vacancy rate. ....

New Law Helps OU Health Boost Doctor, Nurse Training In Oklahoma

Health officials say a new law will help curb the doctor and nursing shortage in Oklahoma by providing more medical training throughout the state.
According to OU Health, Senate Bill 79 will restore a sales tax credit which will free up funds for training for a number of medical residents and nurse practitioners.
OU Health was a nonprofit until it was sold to an out of state for-profit company in the late ‘90s. That caused the legislature to vote to remove its tax-exemption. However, the hospital has since transitioned back to a local nonprofit and this bill will reinstate that tax-exempt status. ....

Almost half of the nurse refresher course scholarships funded by the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma are still available to nurses who want to return to the field or enter it for the first time.
Each $2,000 scholarship will pay for the course for a nurse who does not have an active license but who wants to return to work or who never took the board exams.
The statewide nurse refresher course is part of a partnership between the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing and the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. Ten Oklahoma CareerTech technology centers offer the course. ....
