For native Santa Feans, the field trip to the watershed in 5th grade epitomizes outdoor learning. But recently, few students have made their enduring visit with the Santa Fe Watershed Association.
We haven t been able to do in-person field trips since fall of 2019, says Morika Hensley, director of planning, education and restoration at the association.
Field trips make up the bulk of students outdoor education, relegated to a few sessions per year, including the well-known Audubon New Mexico and Santa Fe Botanical Garden trips offered to elementary school students. When shared indoor environments like classrooms became uninhabitable last March, shuttering schools across the state, formal outdoor learning opportunities also stopped. ....

The New Mexico Senate last week passed Memorial 1, hoping to bring more children outdoors to learn. Eileen Everett from Environmental Education of New Mexico said their many partnerships, including with UNM Law School’s Wild Friends helped shape the legislation to bring kids’ learning out from the indoor classroom.
EILEEN EVERETT: Last fall, when the students at Wild Friends selected what they really wanted to focus on this year, they picked outdoor classrooms, which seems just so timely and relevant given COVID-19 right now. Senate Memorial 1 really has two main things that it s asking for. One, for the governor to declare an Outdoor Learning Day for New Mexico, which we hope will happen this fall, the fall of 2021. And the other big ask is to create an interagency task force, which would include state agencies like the Public Education Department, State Parks, our Outdoor Recreation Division and others, to really engage in dialogue around what are additional res ....

Culpeper volunteers turn school courtyard into outdoor classrooms

Most of us dream but little comes of it.
Tori Gelbert dreamt of something andâwith lots of help from the Culpeper communityâis making it come to life.
Seizing on her inspiration, more than two dozen students and adults are creating outdoor classrooms in what was a schoolâs largely unused central courtyard.
The idea came to Gelbert in her sleep one night, though the principal of Emerald Hill Elementary School said she was embarrassed to admit it.
The principal, a runner who used to coach track, had dreamt of holding the grand opening of a track built inside the wings of Emerald Hill, which are grouped around a central courtyard where a few teachers used to take warm-weather lunch breaks on four picnic tables. ....
