Dr. William W. Hauswirth, whose long and distinguished career includes developing and testing treatments for multiple forms of genetic blindness, is among the scientists being recognized for their pioneering work to eradicate vision loss. Hauswirth was among 13 scientists awarded The Sanford and Sue Greenberg Prize to End Blindness, which carries a total of $3 million in funding.
Hauswirth’s achievements include a decades-long effort to bring sight to patients who have a genetic form of vision loss known as Leber congenital amaurosis type 2. His work with collaborators at the University of Pennsylvania culminated with federal approval of a gene therapy for the disease in late 2017.   ....

On Dec. 14, the Sanford and Susan Greenberg Prize to End Blindness honored 13 scientists who have made extraordinary headway in the worldwide battle against blindness. Among them was James G. Fujimoto, the Elihu Thomson Professor of Electrical Engineering within MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).
Recipients of the Greenberg Prize are honored in two categories: the Outstanding Achievement Prize, highlighting strides toward treating and curing blindness, and the Visionary Prize, providing funding for scientists whose research exhibits significant potential in ending this debilitating condition. Fujimoto, a principal investigator in the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE), was awarded the Visionary Prize for his research, which focuses upon the areas of biomedical imaging, optical coherence tomog ....

Penn vision researchers honored by End Blindness 2020

 E-Mail
Three University of Pennsylvania researchers have been honored by The Sanford and Sue Greenberg Prize to End Blindness by 2020 for their research, which led to the first Food and Drug Administration-approved gene therapy for a genetic disease. Gustavo D. Aguirre of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Jean Bennett and Albert M. Maguire of the Perelman School of Medicine, together with William Hauswirth of the University of Florida, are recipients of the Outstanding Achievement Prize, awarded in a virtual ceremony.
The four scientists share a $1 million prize, funds that will go to support further laboratory and clinical research that advances vision science. Together, their work going from an animal model of disease to human clinical trials led to an FDA-approved gene therapy for Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) caused by a mutation in the RPE65 gene, a retinal disease that causes visual impairments beginning in infancy. Now commercialized and used routinely, thi ....

Dr. G.N. Rao will receive the award in the outstanding achievement category
The LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) has added another feather to its cap by being selected for the prestigious ‘Greenberg Prize – End Blindness 2020’.
Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, Founder-Chair, LVPEI, will receive the award in the ‘outstanding achievement prize’ category.
The winners were chosen based on the strength of their contributions to eliminate blindness.
‘End Blindness’ was a movement created by Dr. Sanford Greenberg, who had himself lost his eyes at the age of 19, and his wife Susan. When Dr. Greenberg was chairman of the board of governors of Johns Hopkins University s Wilmer Eye Institute in 2012, this award was announced to recognise the work of the scientific and medical communities who pioneer the fight ....
