Aimee Triplett’s son has been attending school in person at San Marcos Unified since November.
Even so, Triplett hasn’t been able to return to her job teaching preschool, because her son’s school, Carrillo Elementary, has been providing hybrid learning. Her son goes to school for two days a week, for a total of 10 hours of in-person learning. The rest of the time the 8-year-old does school work on various computer apps at home.
“It’s better than nothing, but it’s still not good enough,” said Triplett, a single mom who says she can’t afford childcare. ....

SAN DIEGO La Jolla Country Day School has been open full-time since September 2020. But how?
Everything we ve done is to take care of the well-being of our staff, our faculty, and our students, Gary Krahn, Head of School at La Jolla Country Day, said.
La Jolla Country Day is a pre-K through high school campus with 1,100 students.
Since indoor classes reopened full-time, Krahn says less than 1% of students have tested positive for COVID-19. Those cases are believed to have been transmitted off-site, and no outbreaks have been reported at the school. ....

For months, UC San Diego has had a wastewater testing program on its campus that detects shed pieces of the novel coronavirus in feces.
In November, the university started working with San Diego County to extend that program to some K-12 schools and child care centers, said Rebecca Fielding-Miller, assistant public health professor at UCSD who is leading the school testing program. ....
