Pamlico Sound Ferry Routes Return To Full Schedule Wednesday

The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division has announced it will return to its full schedule on April 21 on Pamlico Sound routes between Cedar Island, Swan Quarter and Ocracoke. The division completed a test run Tuesday with the
M/V Swan Quarter to make sure the channel is navigable. It took almost a month for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to clear shoaling that was occurring in the ferry channel just outside of Ocracoke’s Silver Lake Harbor.
The full schedule beginning April 21, weather permitting, is as follows:
Ocracoke to Cedar Island: 7:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. ....

Swan Quarter, Cedar Island Ferry Runs To Ocracoke To Resume

Ferry service on Pamlico Sound is resuming as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continues work on shoaling issues in Bigfoot Slough. The N.C. Department of Transportation says in a news release that service from Swan Quarter and Cedar Island to Ocracoke began Tuesday with a two-boat, alternate schedule while the corps continues its work. Shoaling occurs when sand and sediment fill into a ferry channel, making water depths too shallow and the channel too narrow for safe operation of the ferry system’s largest vessels. Dredging operations are expected to continue through the week, weather and times permitting. ....

The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division is suspending all service on the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferry routes through Monday, April 12. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began dredging the Bigfoot Slough last month to clear the shoaling. The agency said in a news release Wednesday that shoaling continues to worsen in the ferry channel, just outside of Ocracoke’s Silver Lake Harbor. Shoaling occurs when sediment fills the channel, making water depths too shallow and too narrow for the ferry vessels to safely operate. The Ferry Division will reassess channel conditions on Monday and make a decision on whether to resume service at that time. ....

Six employees on the Pamlico Sound ferry route between Cedar Island and Ocracoke have tested positive for COVID-19. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said a news release that two of the positive tests came from the crew of the
M/V Swan Quarter, and the other four came from shore personnel. The employees who tested positive are recovering at home under quarantine for at least 14 days. The department said eleven other employees who were in contact with the crew have not tested positive, but are in quarantine.
