Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) hosted a luau at its AdventurePlex facility in Manhattan Beach on July 24 to honor and thank its volunteers and community partners who assisted with its COVID-19 response, including working at its testing and vaccination sites, running essential errands for those needing help during COVID-19, supporting student health during distance learning and more.

“This past year was unprecedented; we could not have expected COVID-19 to dramatically change our lives for so long,” said Beach Cities Health District CEO Tom Bakaly. “When our community needed support to get us through this time, our volunteers and community partners were there and stepped forward to serve others. We could not have done this without our community — thank you for being a part of our BCHD Ohana.”

Fairhaven Residents Vote to Recall Select Board Chair Freitas

FAIRHAVEN — Fairhaven residents have spoken. Select Board Chair Daniel Freitas will no longer sit on the town's highest board after voters decided overwhelmingly to recall him in the July 26 special election.
According to the unofficial election results, out of 2,345 ballots cast, 1,903 were in favor of recalling Freitas, more than four times the 419 votes against.
Replacing Freitas on the Select Board will be School Committee member Stasia Powers, who won with 807 votes against Sustainability Committee Vice Chair Leon Correy III (785 votes) and Public Works Board member Cameron Durant (659 votes.)
Powers will fill in for the rest of Freitas' term, until the 2022 Town Election next spring.

Johnny Byrne, 22, was spending his summer juggling a business internship and classes at UC Berkeley when he decided to add training for the 70.3 mile Santa Cruz Triathlon to his schedule. The Manhattan Beach resident’s motivation to do the triathlon was to raise research funds for Down syndrome disintegrative disorder (DSDD), a rare disease that causes individuals with Down syndrome to regress in their language and other skills. Byrne’s younger brother Thomas suffers from the disorder.
After learning how little is known about DSDD, Byrne decided to dedicate the triathlon he was training for to raise research funds for the disease. In May, Byrne created a fundraising page on the IronMan Foundation website, and since then, he has raised over $31,000 of his $50,000 fundraising goal. The Santa Cruz IronMan is September 12.

The new surge in COVID-19 cases that is occurring globally due to combination of the highly contagious novel coronavirus Delta variant and lingering unvaccinated populations has reached the Beach Cities.
Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach all experienced a significant uptick in COVID-19 over the past two weeks.
Redondo Beach registered 65 new cases the week ending July 17, the most since January, which was the peak of the pandemic. Manhattan Beach registered 21 cases the week ending July 10, and 32 the following week, its highest totals since early April. Hermosa Beach registered 18 cases the week ending July 10, and 32 cases the week ending July 17, its highest total since early February. On July 20, Manhattan Beach reported 13 new cases.
