Family Focus Evanston honors community members, director in annual benefit

Family Focus Evanston honored residents and organizations during its annual benefit event Thursday.
The event, themed “Evanston’s Black Heroes,” featured students from Family Focus’s after-school program who performed biographies of prominent Black Evanston residents from both the past and present.
Family Focus President and CEO Dara Munson said she is proud of the role that the organization plays in supporting Evanston’s Black community. Its Evanston center has operated out of 2010 Dewey Ave. for over 40 years, serving as a central point of resources and programming for the 5th Ward. Family Focus has since expanded, adding six other centers across the Chicago area. ....

Evanston Performing Arts Collective brings residents together

The Evanston Performing Arts Collective is the latest arts initiative to rethink how local groups can continue to share stories in a pandemic. The collective moved their work online to bring joy to the Evanston community.
“We’re storytellers; we have to tell stories,” said John Frank, co-founder and artistic director of Evanston 2nd Act Players, a group in the collective. “If we can’t do it in public we’ll do it online.”
At least 11 organizations, including 2nd Act Players and the Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre, united to form EPAC. The collective unveiled their second installation on Monday, in the four-part series “Celebrating Life, Community and the Arts.” ....

"Am I the Only One Here" tackles belonging, identity

In the spring of her junior year, ETHS student Carmiya Bady was supposed to play Velma Kelly in “Chicago” but the pandemic closed schools before the show could begin. Countless performances, both at ETHS and Evanston’s several community theatres, were subsequently postponed, canceled, or went virtual.
As summer came, with no end to COVID in sight, Tim Rhoze, Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre’s artistic director, approached Andrew Biliter, the artistic director of Mudlark Theater, with an idea.
Rhoze proposed a partnership between Fleetwood-Jourdain, Mudlark and Piven Theatre Workshop that would provide Evanston high school students the space and funding to devise their own show, with Biliter acting as the devising facilitator. ....
