Sunshine Coast Council is poised to push forward with its plans for coastline protection.
The council s Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy is due to be adopted at the May ordinary meeting on Thursday.
Formal consultation was undertaken from November 9 to December 7, 2020.
The community feedback included the critical role a healthy coastal zone played in underpinning the economy and community identity.
Other themes that emerged during consultation included the need for a great focus on maintaining dunal vegetation and buffers as a main defence to rising sea levels and coastal hazards.
The feedback also identified a strong desire from many in the community to be involved in ongoing management of the coastal zone and the need for decision making to be based on the best available scientific evidence and assessment of risk . ....

Key groups outline concerns with major rezoning proposal

The group said that Treasury had already released a statement based on the SEQ Regional Plan that there was already 15 years land supply available within the urban footprint and zoned.
The group questioned the timing of the amendments, given council was currently consulting on its Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy and a key Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change report was due to be released documenting latest climate change projections.
The group outlined its thoughts that the report could significantly alter views on suitable planning and zoning for low-lying areas like the Bli Bli land earmarked for rezoning.
Issues with the land s suitability for housing and ability to be insured due to its location were also raised as was the timing as council contemplates the next iteration of its planning scheme. ....

The Palaszczuk Government and City of Gold Coast will partner to plan and develop new technologies, infrastructure and environmental management practices under a new agreement aimed at tackling climate change.
