This week, the Discovery Channel is running its annual, week-long TV programming block, Shark Week. 
Inspired by the pop culture phenomenon, we ve compiled the five most common you d find in the Texas waters of the Gulf of Mexico (because we love our sharks in the Lone Star State).
According to the Coastal Fisheries Division with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, about 40 shark species are swimming around the Texas waters. However, the following five are abundant:
Atlantic sharpnose shark: The species is named for their long, surfboard-like snot, which is longer than it is wide. The body usually has several prominent white spots and the second dorsal fin originates over the midpoint of the anal fin. It s also the shark that is most commonly caught.  ....

Federal Red Snapper Season Opens June 1
AUSTIN – The private recreational angler red snapper season in federal water opens Tuesday, June 1, 2021. Bag and size limits will remain unchanged. The regulations are 2 fish per person daily with a 16-inch minimum size limit in federal waters, and 4 fish per person daily with a 15-inch minimum in state waters. Red snapper caught in federal waters count as part of the state bag limit of 4 fish. No more than 4 red snapper may be in your possession while fishing in state waters and no more than 2 in federal waters.
Since 2018, the National Marine Fisheries Service has granted the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) the authority to establish the opening and closing of the red snapper fishery in federal waters off the Texas coast for private recreational anglers fishing from their own vessels. The federally permitted for-hire sector continues to be managed in its current structure set by the federal government. ....

Gulf Shrimp Season Closing on Saturday, May 15, 2021
AUSTIN – The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both Texas and federal waters will close 30 minutes after sunset on Saturday, May 15, 2021until a still-to-be determined date in July. While the statutory opening date for the gulf season is July 15, the Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be sampling shrimp populations this summer to determine the optimum opening date.
In order to allow brown shrimp to reach a larger and more valuable size prior to harvest, the shrimp fishery is closed annually off Texas. This helps prevent the waste of brown shrimp that might otherwise be discarded due to their small size. ....
