Funding boost to research into seaweed for clinical applications


Funding to fast-track the growth of Australia’s next generation of marine bioproducts industries.
A team of researchers at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterial Science (ACES) based at the University of Wollongong (UOW), in conjunction with a consortium of 68 Australian and international partners, has been awarded $59 Million in funding in the latest round of grants from the Federal Government’s Cooperative Research Centres program.
The funding will fast-track the growth of Australia’s next generation of marine bioproducts industries and, ACES researchers will provide bioengineering and biomaterials expertise for the Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (MB-CRC), bringing together the excellence of fabrication skills at UOW with the growing research and industry activity in marine bioresources. ....

The Morrison Government is investing almost $100 million in two new South Australian headquartered cooperative research projects that will turbocharge the growing marine bio-products sector and help heavy industries like steel transition to a cleaner and more competitive future.
The funding – provided through the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Grants program – includes $39 million to establish the Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC), which will be led by the University of Adelaide. A further $59 million will help to establish the Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (MB-CRC), led by Flinders University. ....

Three new Cooperative Research Centres supercharge Australian innovation

The Cooperative Research Centres Association today welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, the Hon Christian Porter, of three new Cooperative Research Centres.
The new centres, Digital Finance CRC, Heavy Industry Low Carbon Transition (HILT) CRC and Marine Bioproducts CRC, have been funded under Round 22 of the Cooperative Research Centres Program, which marks its 30
thAnniversary this year.
They represent a collective investment of $664.6 million, leveraging some $158 million Australian Government investment with funding from both industry and universities.
“Industry-led cooperative research enabled through the Cooperative Research Centres Program isan Australian success story, translating research into action,” said CRC Association CEO Jane O’Dwyer. ....
