Forecasters didn’t predict whether the storms, which can range in force from a tropical depression to a hurricane, will actually make landfall in the Hawaiian islands.

Federal hurricane forecasters are predicting a near- to below-normal hurricane season this year, with two to five tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific Basin.
That’s largely due to regional sea surface temperatures that are expected to remain cooler than normal during the annual June-to November season, officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Wednesday during their annual outlook briefing. ....

Newly Discovered Fish Species Named After Hawaiʻi Researcher

(AP) A new species of fish has been discovered during a research study funded by the National Science Foundation and University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program that focuses on deepwater snappers. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Sunday that the new species of deepwater snapper was named Etelis boweni by the research team in recognition of Brian Bowen. He is a research professor from the University of Hawaiʻi who has spent over three decades studying marine fishes. Kim Andrews is the scientist who led the international research team and says the discovery is valuable because the Etelis boweni fish can now be managed differently than their deepwater snapper counterparts. ....
