Sirens in Stutsman County operated correctly during the simulated countywide tornado exercise Wednesday, April 28, except for one siren in the city of Streeter, said Jerry Bergquist, Stutsman County emergency manager and 911 coordinator.
“When we checked with the individual that was monitoring the siren in Streeter, the siren did not activate, Bergquist said.
Stutsman County conducted the exercise at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday as part of Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week, simulating what occurs locally when a tornado warning is issued by the National Weather Service.
The goal of the exercise was to test the Communications Center’s internal notification procedures county-wide including the testing of area community siren systems. The siren systems for Jamestown, Buchanan, Cleveland, Medina and Streeter were tested, activated for about 3 minutes ....

Burgum proclaims Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Doug Burgum has proclaimed April 26-30 as Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week in North Dakota.
Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week is an annual event to keep the public informed and remind them of the potential risks of summer storms. These storms can produce lightning, damaging winds, hail, flash flooding, rural fires, power outages, and can cause the release of hazardous materials. They also cause injury and death, as well as extensive damage to property each year.
“It is important that all North Dakotans are well-informed and prepared to protect themselves from severe summer storms. Families, schools and businesses also should have plans to follow for when severe weather strikes,” said North Dakota Homeland Security Director Cody Schulz. ....

Preparing for Severe Summer Weather, Siren Tests Planned

Another part of the preparedness for the county includes testing tornado sirens. Bergquist says they will conduct siren tests at around 11:15 AM Wednesday, April 28th. This will activate sirens in Jamestown, Buchanan, Cleveland, Medina, and Streeter to ensure they are working correctly.
Because the National Weather Service will not directly be involved with the exercise, the simulated warning will not be broadcast through the National Weather Service all-hazards weather radio system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) for local AM/FM radio stations and cable television providers will not be activated.
The Stutsman Alert’s notification system powered by Everbridge will also not be activated for this test. ....
