Women call for networks of solidarity in their struggle against Turkish state violence

WOMEN will take to the streets across Turkey on Monday in a firm stand against “patriarchal state violence,” with jailed political leaders calling for international networks of solidarity to be built.
Former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Figen Yuksekdag sent her “heartfelt and passionate greetings and love” to all of those protesting against war, discrimination and violence.
Ms Yuksekdag, founder of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), has been in jail since November 2016 and faces the rest of her life behind bars on trumped-up terrorism charges.
She is seen as a threat to the Turkish state because, as an ethnic Turk, she represents a bridge between the Turkish and Kurdish communities, whose unity is feared by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish authorities arrest 65 revolutionaries in a bid to break the backbone of the growing anti-government resistance

AS ANTI-GOVERNMENT protests continue to grow, revolutionary forces in Turkey warned today of the state’s attempts to break the backbone of their resistance.
Sixty-five people were detained in Istanbul last week after a press conference announcing the launch of a new opposition alliance, the United Fighting Forces (BMG).
Many of those hauled into custody will appear in court tomorrow. There have been allegations of torture during their four days of interrogation by security services.
The new alliance, which includes the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), Partizan, the Revolutionary Party and the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), has been hailed as a major step in uniting Turkey’s revolutionary forces against state oppression.

HDP faces new closure threat as it warns of a return to the 'dark road' of forced disappearances

TURKEY’S opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) demanded the immediate release of its women and youth members today as it faces renewed threats of closure and rumours of imminent constitutional changes.
In a statement HDP said members of its women’s council had been detained as they made their way to a meeting in Ankara by a group calling themselves as “the invisibles,” the name used by a group who kidnapped and tortured Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) activist Gokhan Gunes earlier this month.
“Our friends, who were subjected to pressure, threats and blackmail during their detention, were warned to leave Ankara as soon as possible.

HDP youth warn of 'dirty war' amid new wave of state disappearances in Turkey

TURKEY’S opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) will launch a new campaign next week aimed at countering attempts to close the party down in a “dirty war” being waged by the state.
The party’s youngest parliamentary representative Dersim Dag explained that a series of activities will be focused on four main themes: the isolation of jailed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan; the hunger strikes being waged in more than 100 Turkish jails; the so-called Kobane trial, in which 108 senior HDP figures face prison; and the recent European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling that former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtas should be released.

Turkey: Could student protests signal a new youth movement?

Students, with their greater interest in radical politics and their more progressive social values, have tended to view the AKP government with suspicion, at best. This includes the periods when Erdoğan's chosen image as a conservative democratiser was more widespread, even among some somewhat liberal sections of the left, and more recently, particularly after the 2013 Gezi Uprising, where at least half the country have begun to view him as a paranoid dictator.
That young students would not be too warm to any conservative leader is highly unsurprising. That Turkish students and faculty are organising against their own school officials as an "arm" of the regime invites more comment and is newsworthy.

Fears raised over 'forced disappearance' of ESP activist in Istanbul

CCTV footage showed construction worker Gokhan Gunes being abducted by security services shortly after a hospital appointment.
But he has not been seen since with lawyers saying that local police and anti-terror units have all denied holding the political activist, leading to fears that he has come to harm and may even have been killed.
Solicitor Sezgin Ucar explained that police were aware of the political activities of Mr Gunes, who had been subjected to threats and harassment by Turkish state forces prior to his disappearance.
It is alleged that police had pressed him to become a spy, a common tactic used by Turkish authorities. But ESP said that this refusal led to his kidnap on Wednesday.
