Three more Kurdish women jailed in Turkey after mass arrests

THREE more women were jailed today a week after more than 20 were detained in mass arrests targeting women’s organisations in Turkey’s largely Kurdish city of Diyarbakir.
Free Women’s Movement (TJA) activist Zelal Bilgin and Diyarbakir metropolitan municipality councillors Bahar Karakas Ulug and Rabia Tekas were jailed on charges of “membership of an illegal organisation.”
They were sent to Diyarbakir women’s closed prison, bringing the number jailed during the operation to 11.
Twenty-six women were detained during police raids on their homes last week. Arrest warrants have been issued for a total of 33 people, all of them high-profile women, including Jin News journalist Beritan Canozer, who was released on a control order last week.

Kurdish journalist hits out after unlawful detention in Turkey

KURDISH journalist Beritan Canozer has hit out after saying she was “unlawfully detained” for four days in Turkey last week after covering a demonstration held last November opposing violence against women.
She spoke to the Morning Star after she was released on a judicial control order last Friday, after she was accused of being a member of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Ms Canozer was detained in the largely Kurdish city of Diyarbakir along with 21 other women, including those from the Rosa Women’s Association, which was also targeted by security services last year.
She was charged for covering a press statement made by Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Pervin Buldan for Jin TV on November 25, which is International Day Against Violence Against Women.

HDP warns Turkish government it will be held to account for 'the massacres of women'

THE co-chair of Turkey’s Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) called on the government today to take action to stem a rising tide of femicide, accusing the authorities of being “responsible for the massacres of women.”
Pervin Buldan was speaking at a meeting of the party’s parliamentary women’s group a day after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) had dismissed the number of murders of women in Turkey as insignificant, claiming that “three times as many men are killed.”
“The duty of the government is not to issue condemnation, it is to prevent these murders and to ensure the heaviest punishment of the perpetrators,” she told those gathered, who included members of the Rosa Women’s Association and Revolutionary Party leader Elif Torun.

Women call for networks of solidarity in their struggle against Turkish state violence

WOMEN will take to the streets across Turkey on Monday in a firm stand against “patriarchal state violence,” with jailed political leaders calling for international networks of solidarity to be built.
Former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Figen Yuksekdag sent her “heartfelt and passionate greetings and love” to all of those protesting against war, discrimination and violence.
Ms Yuksekdag, founder of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), has been in jail since November 2016 and faces the rest of her life behind bars on trumped-up terrorism charges.
She is seen as a threat to the Turkish state because, as an ethnic Turk, she represents a bridge between the Turkish and Kurdish communities, whose unity is feared by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
