Despite President Biden on Feb. 20 issuing a major disaster declaration for 77 Texas counties, local and state government responses to winter’s recent catastrophe there saw some businesses, such as Houston’s Gallery Furniture, literally open their doors to people without power, water or food, and many individuals help neighbors and strangers stay warm, fed and safe.
That’s “mutual aid.”
And in downstate Illinois, the isolation needed in a pandemic is maintained even as dozens of people get together to work for others, even at a safe distance. That’s also mutual aid – specifically Tazewell County Mutual Aid. There, a garage outside Pekin is constantly filled and emptied of material for neighbors. A recent wish list for items to gather and distribute includes powdered milk, dish soap, coins for laundromats and gift cards (“no more than $25 increments”) for fuel. ....

But there’s a reason you’ve been seeing pictures of people filling a community refrigerator and videos of folks handing out clothing on the street accompanied by #mutualaid all over your social feeds lately. “We’re dealing with a disaster of massive proportions, [COVID-19], that most people have never lived through in their lifetime,” Kaba says. “When you are in this kind of a situation, you figure out ways to relate to other people that allow you to actually survive. On Wednesday night, photos posted to Twitter appeared to show something borderline unthinkable: Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas boarding a flight to Cancun, Mexico. In the middle of a pandemic. And in the middle of a crisis that had left millions of his constituents without power or clean drinking water.
Surely it must be a mistake, people theorized. But the photos were real. And by Thursday, the Republican senator issued a statement saying that the once-in-a-generation ice storm that was endangering people all over his state had also canceled school, and his daughters wanted to go on vacation. He returned home Thursday afternoon and called the trip “obviously a mistake.” ....
