ANIMAL WATCH-National Animal Control Officer Appreciation week was recognized and celebrated nationally from April 11–17, 2021, but was unnoticed or ignored at City of Los Angeles Animal Services by then-General Manager Brenda Barnette, until the afternoon of Thursday, April 15.
That was when a succinct post appeared on the LAAS Facebook page with NO hashtags or correlating media release to spread the message:
“It’s National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, and we want to say, Thank You to our amazing field staff, which includes Animal Control Officers and SMART team. We appreciate all the hard work you do to care for and assist our LA Community. Keep up the Fantastic Work.” ....

Bedford police celebrate Bedford/Lexington Animal Control Officer

Bedford Police Department Chief Robert Bongiorno and the Bedford police recently recognized the town’s Animal Control Officer during Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week.
Officer Mike Leskouski has been Bedford’s Animal Control Officer since 1997 and has served the same role in Lexington since 2016.
“The best part of my job is educating people about wildlife and helping injured wildlife,” Leskouski said. “It’s a pleasure to know that we’re doing something good for injured animals.”
Leskouski responds to hundreds of calls each year. Some callers may have a question, others report stray dogs, neighborhood nuisance problems, rabies concerns, and injured animals. ....

This week is Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week and Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue presented Sheridan Community Service Officers Ed Boone and Kris Walker with some gifts to commemorate the week. Second Chance Director Elaine Kristiansen explains.

Kristiansen said the signs that were made will be displayed at the Police Department and at Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue. She said the signs along with the kitten traps, waterproof trap covers for adult traps and City Brew gift cards were a way of saying thank you to the CSO’s for the service they provide in Sheridan. ....

Solano Board of Supervisors stands up for victims of crime, sexual assault
FAIRFIELD Solano County supervisors on Tuesday adopted resolutions recognizing April 18-24 as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in Solano County and the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.
Supervisor Monica Brown emphasized not only the emotional toll caused by crime, but the monetary costs as well.
“. . . (A)nnually, rape costs the U.S. more than any other crime ($127 billion), followed by assault ($93 billion), murder ($71 billion), and drunk driving, including fatalities ($61 billion),” the resolution states.
District Attorney Krishna Abrams noted that while protecting defendants’ rights and justice reform are important, she said it is critical never to forget the crime victims. ....
