Otumuheke Stream steams quietly through bush and scrub and along the edge of Spa Thermal Park in Taupō.

A teenager drowned after courageously trying to rescue a girl who got into trouble in Waikato River.
Police say the 18-year-old, Taihape s Logan Ken Hughes, tried to save the life of a 12-year-old girl from Waikato River on Friday, December 18, however he then himself got into trouble in the water.
Another person jumped in and helped the girl to safety, police say.
Later, in trying conditions, several rescuers worked tremendously hard to retrieve the 18-year-old from about 7m of water, police said. ....

Police are warning people about the risks around Waikato River after a man drowned while trying to rescue a 12-year-old girl in Taupō last week.
The 18-year-old got into trouble in the water on Friday after attempting to save the girl s life.
He was Logan Hughes from Taihape.
Another person jumped in and helped the girl to safety. Several rescuers worked hard to retrieve the 18-year-old from about 7m of water in tough conditions.
CPR was performed for 40 minutes, but he later died in hospital. ....

Subdivision proposal for Taupo's north clears first step

An area north of the Poihipi Road intersection with Wairakei Drive would contain a mix of medium density and general residential sections.
A residential subdivision that could see 780 sections created on Taupō’s northern outskirts has vaulted a first planning hurdle with the Taupō District Council – but not without some signalling of likely public concern.
While the foreseeable worries of some residents to Taupō’s north and west about traffic congestion were signalled by two councillors, council chief executive officer Gareth Green said accepting the private plan change request was an initial procedural step.
“I just don’t want you to get into a place where you are conflicted in the future discussions and decisions that you need to make, so please just focus on the procedural elements at this point,” he told the last full meeting of the council for 2020. ....
