Colorado COVID-19 Outbreaks Changes June 2021

Why the switch? We’re starting to see population-level protection from vaccines, and that lessens the risk of disease transmission across the state, says state epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy. With an improved testing landscape, especially in settings like schools and summer camps where we typically see a large number of outbreaks, this change allows us to efficiently focus our resources on the outbreak scenarios most likely to impact public health.
The move also makes the state s stats look better but the outbreak totals were already falling under the old rules.
Until June 1, the CDPHE considered an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location were confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period were paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. ....

Kids Dominate New Colorado COVID-19 Outbreaks

New outbreaks of COVID-19 identified by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment fell by 22.4 percent over the past week, with dips of similar or even greater size in almost every category tracked by the state during the pandemic. But there was one demographic group that defied the decline: kids.
Outbreaks associated with children make up well over a third of the latest batch, with most of the spread taking place at K-12 schools, where infections of students, the majority of whom have not been vaccinated, are much more common than those involving staffers.

Colorado COVID-19 Outbreaks Spike in Supposedly Safe Places

Among the first Coloradans to be vaccinated against COVID-19 were residents and employees of nursing homes and other senior-care centers in the state. But while these efforts initially seemed to be eliminating outbreaks at such facilities, that s clearly not the case. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has reported nearly 100 outbreaks at health-care sites in the past two weeks, with the category surpassing outbreaks at K-12 schools for the first time in months.

COVID-19 Colorado K-12 School Outbreaks New Record

It s a good thing the school year is almost over: The latest report from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment lists 58 new COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools, the most in a single week since the department began releasing weekly outbreak lists over a year ago.
Of the 859 outbreaks currently under active investigation by the CDPHE, K-12 schools account for 251, or just over 29 percent of the total. That appears to be a record, too.
