This Linux malware is hijacking supercomputers across the globe

Reverse engineered by ESET and described in a blog post on Tuesday, the malware has been traced back to attacks against supercomputers used by a large Asian Internet Service Provider (ISP), a US endpoint security vendor, and a number of privately-held servers, among other targets.
The cybersecurity team has named the malware Kobalos in deference to the kobalos, a small creature in Greek mythology believed to cause mischief.
Kobalos is unusual for a number of reasons. The malware s codebase is tiny but is sophisticated enough to impact at least Linux, BSD, and Solaris operating systems. ESET suspects it may possibly be compatible with attacks against AIX and Microsoft Windows machines, too. ....

ESET researchers have analyzed malware that has been targeting high performance computing (HPC) clusters, among other high-profile targets. We reverse engineered this small, yet complex, malware that is portable to many operating systems including Linux, BSD, Solaris, and possibly AIX and Windows. We have named this malware Kobalos for its tiny code size and many tricks; in Greek mythology, a Kobalos is a small, mischievous creature. Tiny Kobalos Malware Bedevils Supercomputers to Steal Logins

The sophisticated backdoor steals SSH credentials for servers in academic and scientific high-performance computing clusters.
A tiny-sized malware that packs a big punch has been targeting supercomputers, especially those used in academia and scientific enterprises. It allows initial access for a variety of follow-on attacks, including credential theft – and potentially data exfiltration or cryptomining.
That’s according to ESET researchers, who discovered the Kobalos backdoor in recent months. The code grants remote access to the file system, allows attackers to create terminal sessions and allows proxying connections to other Kobalos-infected servers.
“Kobalos malware contains generic commands to read from and write to the file system and spawn a terminal to execute arbitrary commands,” they explained. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t contain any specific payload that could indicate the intentions of its authors.
