Burlington's PCB Problem Could Impact Other Schools Across Vermont

Shortly after Burlington High School closed last September because of high levels of airborne toxic chemicals in its tech center building, district Superintendent Tom Flanagan got what he thought was encouraging news.
Further testing in the other five high school buildings found polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) levels between one and 300 nanograms per cubic meter, with an average of 98 nanograms still above Vermont s screening level of 15 nanograms per cubic meter but significantly below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s guidelines of 500 to 600 nanograms for high school-age students and staff.

Burlington School Board Considering Building New High School After Ending Renovation Project

The Burlington, Vermont school board decided this week to stop a multi-million dollar renovation project and not reopen the high school facility. Last year potentially cancer causing PCB’s were discovered in the buildings and grounds and the superintendent and school officials recommended the board now change course and build a new high school.
In November 2018 city voters approved a $70 million bond to completely renovate the Burlington High School buildings. But last September air testing detected levels of PCBs above federal and state approved levels and the buildings were closed. Students attended classes remotely and are now attending in person classes in a converted department store in the city’s downtown. ....

Vermont Business Magazine The Burlington High School Principal Hiring Committee has announced three finalists for the BHS principalship. The candidates are Steve Berbeco, who most recently served as Deputy Commissioner for the Child Development Division of Vermont’s Department for Children and Families; Gregory Kirkland, an assistant principal at Clayton County Public Schools; and Lauren McBride, the current interim principal at Burlington High School.
All candidates will participate in a virtual Community and Staff Forum on April 15, from 6 to 7:30 PM. Stakeholders will have the chance to hear candidates answer questions about their qualifications and their hopes for the future of education and BHS. Former Burlington Principal Blames School Board for His Abrupt Departure

Shortly after Burlington High School interim principal Noel Green suddenly resigned on January 8, both the superintendent and the school board expressed shock about his decision.
In fact, the board wrote in a January 10 statement, Superintendent Tom Flanagan had planned to recommend Green for the permanent principal position at an upcoming board meeting, something school commissioners supported.
Yet last week, Green, who quit without another job lined up, told
Seven Days that the board had strung him along for nearly two years, and the trust between the sides had been irrevocably broken. In a district that has emphasized hiring and retaining educators of color, he is the second Black administrator to leave in the last seven months; former superintendent Yaw Obeng departed at the end of June for a job in Kansas City. ....

Burlington High School and Burlington Technical Center remain closed on Oct. 19, 2020 after PCBs, a cancer-causing agent, was found in air quality tests. BHS students are currently learning remotely, something they became accustomed to during the coronavirus pandemic which closed the school seven months ago. BTC students are expected to be back to full, in-person classes by the end of October after the community found locations across the area to host the BTC programs.
Update, Feb. 2 2021: At a meeting of the Burlington Board of School Commissioners, Lauren McBride and Gayle Botelho were officially conferred to their positions of interim principal and assistant principal respectively. ....
