Should all Oak Ridge students wear masks?
Masks or other face coverings are currently optional for students at Oak Ridge Schools.
However, Oak Ridge residents, including parents and one grandparent, spoke up at Monday night s Oak Ridge Board of Education meeting. They spoke in favor of the students wearing masks in schools.
Some cited the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19 and the increase in virus cases in Anderson County.
Things are moving rapidly, said Linda Pelech, grandmother of two Oak Ridge elementary school children.
The Tennessee Department of Health website Monday showed COVID-19 cases across the state increased by 1,716 and nine infected people had died. In Anderson County, as of Monday there were 169 active cases and the total deaths from the novel coronavirus stood at 179, having increased by four or more over the last several weeks. In neighboring Roane County, active cases totaled 185 and deaths 110. ....

Oak Ridge Schools receives Top Workplaces awards for company culture

The school system won a special category award for how it trains employees and placed second overall in the large businesses category. First Horizon took first place in the large businesses category.
The News Sentinel announced both awards in a video posted to its YouTube Channel Thursday morning, A special section published in the newspaper on Sunday highlighted the winners.
This is the fifth year Knox News has partnered with independent survey firm Energage to offer the Top Workplaces awards, which recognize companies in the area with outstanding company cultures. Energage surveys the employees of nominated companies and ranks businesses according to the results of those anonymous surveys. ....

A proposed budget for Oak Ridge Schools includes a pay raise of at least 1% for all schools’ employees.
Oak Ridge Schools staff presented the proposed budget for the next school year at a special called meeting Monday night at the Robert J. Smallridge School Administration Building on New York Avenue.
“I think we have a good path going forward,” Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers said at the meeting.
The total budget, including local, state and federal funds, is estimated at $77 million for fiscal year 2022.
Both the presentation and a memo to Oak Ridge City Council explain the proposed budget will not involve any request for local money above the amount City Council gives the school system using a set funding formula, or any increase in the city property tax rate. ....

New infections in AC dropping? 148 dead from coronavirus
Five more Anderson County residents have died of COVID-19 since reports earlier this week.
At midday Wednesday, the Tennessee Department of Health website showed a total of 148 deaths in Anderson County and 196 active cases. That is in comparison to the midday Monday total of 143 deaths and 255 active cases.
The Tuesday County Data Snapshot on the website indicated that 163 Anderson County residents with the novel coronavirus are hospitalized as of Tuesday.
The numbers of newly infected people appear to be decreasing. According to the website, between Jan. 27 and Feb. 9, approximately 27 new cases were reported each day compared to 39 cases in the prior 14-day period. ....
