EPISD audit: Waste, favoritism in Cabrera administration contracts

The El Paso Independent School District released a corrective action plan with 11 recommendations after an internal audit into academic service contracts found evidence of waste, alleged vendor favoritism and a lack of transparency during former Superintendent Juan Cabrera s administration.
EPISD s Superintendent of Finance and Operations Carmen Arrieta-Candelaria and Chief Academic Officer Tamekia Brown were suspended and placed on paid administrative leave on ahead of the release of results on an internal audit into academic service contracts over two weeks later.
EPISD declined to confirm whether the two would continue to be employed by the district, though the corrective action plan recommends the Chief Academic Officer should take an active role in three solutions to be implemented this year. ....

SISD names internal auditor Marta Carmona as interim superintendent

The Socorro Independent School Board has chosen its internal auditor, Marta Carmona, to serve as interim superintendent of the district.
Trustees entered into a closed executive session at a special board meeting Tuesday night to discuss various candidates and ultimately authorized Morales to discuss terms of employment and make an offer to Carmona to fill the role.
The final approval of the agreement will go before the board at a subsequent meeting.
The SISD board first discussed the topic at a May 18 board meeting in which the board unanimously approved having new board President David Morales reach out to a short list of candidates, interview them and gauge their interest, before bringing information about the interested parties to the board. ....

Two top El Paso Independent School District administrators were put on leave Monday, ahead of discussions on an internal audit into contracted academic services Wednesday.
Deputy Superintendent of Finance and Operations Carmen Arrieta-Candelaria and Chief Academics Officer Tamekia Brown were put on paid administrative leave, district spokesperson Gustavo Reveles confirmed, though the reason was not disclosed.
Arrieta-Candelaria and Brown could not be reached for comment via their EPISD email addresses.
At the EPISD s regular board meeting Tuesday, in which the district s 2021-22 budget was adopted, trustees voted to postpone or not approve three academic contracts related to learning programs, citing upcoming discussions on the pending internal audit. ....
