CPS Appoints Tianay Amat As Interim Superintendent

The Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education appointed Deputy Superintendent Tianay Amat to serve as the interim superintendent effective June 12.
Current Superintendent Laura Mitchell announced her resignation May 10 to become president and CEO of Beech Acres Learning Center. Mitchell has served on the Beech Acres Board of Directors since 2016.
In a statement, Amat said, I am honored to have the opportunity to serve CPS during this important time. I look forward to partnering with the board, our teachers and staff, and CPS students, families and community as we transition into summer and prepare for the next academic year. ....

CINCINNATI — The parent of a Walnut Hills High School student who has disabilities filed a lawsuit alleging that Cincinnati Public Schools failed to provide legally required education during the pandemic.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati, names Cincinnati Public Schools, Superintendent Laura Mitchell, Walnut Hills High School, Principal John Chambers and CPS Board of Education members Melanie Bates, Eve Bolton, Pamela Bowers, Ben Lindy and Mike Moroski as defendants.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs, named B.Z. on behalf of the student R.Z., alleged the defendants failed to provide an appropriate public education for R.Z. by ignoring the effects of remote learning on R.Z. s Individualized Education Plan, refused to open R.Z. s high school and made no efforts for compensatory servic ....

CPS Teachers Voice Concerns About Returning To Blended Learning

The Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education in December laid out plans to return to blended learning if the city remained below 40 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people. When the board voted last week to return Feb. 1, the city was averaging 66 new daily cases. Some teachers are frustrated with the new plan, saying staff weren t given the opportunity to provide input, and they re worried about contracting the virus. The county has, as we all know, recently moved into purple, Alexander said. It worries me that we likely won t be fully vaccinated, almost any of us, before we re teaching in-person again. ....

Gov. Mike DeWine has said adults working in K-12 schools who want to return or remain educating in person can start receiving vaccines Feb. 1. The state’s goal is to have schools return to in-person learning by March 1.
