Jersey’s Chief Minister has failed in his attempt to get a senior politician into trouble for criticising former government chief executive Charlie Parker.
Senator John Le Fondré complained to the Commissioner for Standards after Senator Kristina Moore gave an interview to ITV News about Mr Parker’s departure from his top job in the civil service.
Today the Commissioner, Paul Kernaghan, concluded Senator Moore’s comments were “not overly personal or prejudicial” after the Chief Minister argued they had “undermined public confidence in the States”. ....

The Scrutiny Liaison Committee says that though shifting the date back by a month would avoid campaigning clashing with Liberation Day celebrations in May, it would put more pressure on scrutiny panels - particularly in examining the Government Plan.
The committee says that the current official lodging period of 12 weeks already poses challenging time frames for politicians to scrutinise legislation.
They add that the Privileges and Procedures Committee (PPC) sees this schedule as a significant political, technical and operational undertaking. ....

Attempt to delay '£90-£130 million' Jersey Government HQ | Channel

The Infrastructure Minister presented his formal plans on 22 December with a 15-day notice period.
Now the Scrutiny Liaison Committee says that is not enough notice to properly look into the arrangement when so much information is still not in the public domain.
It wants the decision pushed back to June.
The decision making requires an independent review as the detail has not been assessed and the government has therefore not been held to account. Due to commercial sensitivities only certain information can be provided to the public and without scrutiny this provides no assurances that Government has been effective or accountable to its actions to the Public to which it serves. ....

Non-essential shops will shut in Jersey from 6pm on Christmas Eve until at least 11 January, under new coronavirus restrictions.
The rules mean bookshops, fashion retailers, bookmakers, hair and beauty salons and other stores must close their doors.
Supermarkets, banks, chemists, petrol stations, garden centres and post offices will be among the businesses that are allowed to remain open. Restaurants and cafes will remain closed unless offering takeaway services.

Dec 24, 2020
AN increase in Covid-19 infections in Jersey is ‘almost inevitable’ during the Christmas break, the government’s advisers on tackling the pandemic have warned.

In a letter to ministers, Dr Patrick Armstrong, chairman of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Cell, said that this was one of the reasons it was recommended to close all non-essential retail businesses from 6pm today.
Other reasons cited included a ‘lack of clarity’ on how the virus was being transmitted in the hospitality sector and households, the high number of cases and the ‘high probability’ that a new highly infectious strain was present in the Island. ....
