Border Bishops Call for ‘Safe, Orderly, and Humane Immigration’
U.S. and Mexican bishops living along the border issued a joint statement this week calling for “humanitarian solutions” to immigration.
“As U.S. and Mexican bishops along the border, we witness daily the dilemma that our migrant sisters and brothers face,” the statement reads.
“For most, the decision to migrate is not motivated by an indifference toward their homeland or the pursuit of economic prosperity; it is a matter of life or death.”
While recognizing the right of nations to control their borders, the bishops call on countries to welcome migrants in accordance with their “intrinsic dignity” and to pay special care to the treatment of children. ....

Placing Our Hope in the Resurrection


We all nurture hopes of various kinds. We hope to live a long and productive life. We hope our children and grandchildren will grow into good people who will contribute to society. We hope for world peace and prosperity. These are all good things, but we can’t necessarily count on them to come to pass. They may or may not.
So what can we hope for that will never disappoint us? St. Augustine once wrote, “The Lord’s resurrection is our hope” (Sermon 261:1). Placing our hope in Jesus’ rising from the dead is a sure bet. In fact, it’s something we can stake our lives on. That’s because the hope St. Augustine is talking about is different from Joe’s hope that he’ll win the lottery. While Joe has no idea whether he’ll ever win, we know that everyone who believes that Jesus has been raised from the dead will be saved (Romans 10:9). So we’re not just wishing something good will happen; we are confident it will! ....

Sale of South Side Chicago hospital to nonprofit finalized

CHICAGO (AP) Chicago s oldest hospital has finalized the facility s sale to a nonprofit.
Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and Insight Chicago announced the agreement Saturday in a joint statement. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the agreement requires Insight to continue operating Mercy as a “full-service community acute-care facility.
Insight Chicago previously received approval from the the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to purchase Mercy from its owner, Trinity Health.
Insight Chicago, which is affiliated with a Michigan health system, filed documents prior to that decision indicating that the hospital’s name will change because it will no longer operate as a Catholic facility. ....
