Canadian government asks Pope to apologize for mass graves of Indigenous children

The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc community announced the discovery of the remains near the Kamloops Indian Residential School in Canada last week. 
Thousands of children across the country, most of whom were Indigenous, were separated from their families and forced to attend the residential schools that were operated by the Catholic Church. 
The Kamloops Indian Residential School was one of the largest in Canada and operated by the Catholic Church between 1890 and 1969 before it was closed in the late 1970s. A 2015 report from the Canadian government detailed physical, sexual and emotional abuse some of the children suffered, and in 2017, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau personally asked the Pope to consider an official apology.  ....

Indigenous Services minister commends Prince Albert COVID-19 vaccine efforts

Canada’s Indigenous Services minister is praising the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) and the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s partnership on a COVID-19 vaccine clinic.
In a news conference on Friday, Marc Miller said they’re “working hard to get vaccines into the arms of people in Prince Albert.”
Miller added that the clinic is also offering cultural services, including smudging and Cree and Dene translations. Transportation is also available upon request.
The PAGC’s on-reserve clinic opened on Apr. 1 at the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Centre.
It’s available to everyone, Indigenous or non-Indigenous, who wishes to get their COVID-19 vaccine. ....

KENORA – The northwestern Ontario community of Kenora is coming under increasing scrutiny over reports of discrimination and racist treatment of members of a First Nation isolating there due to a major COVID-19 outbreak.
