The cancellation of the Stratford Festival at the beginning of the pandemic last year sent shockwaves through this part of Southwestern Ontario, a rural arts and manufacturing hub where popular eateries and quaint mom-and-pop shops rely heavily on tourism dollars.
When that traditionally reliable economic boost evaporated last spring, observers in Stratford were rightfully concerned about whether the city’s small businesses could survive.

Indigenous people with status cards do not have to pay taxes on the Canadian Emergency Response benefit (CERB). Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) and staff discussed CERB and online shopping at Monday’s political Liaison meeting and will release a document to the community with instructions on how to deal with tax charges regarding online shopping and CERB. Community members have asked councillors if they are responsible for paying taxes associated with CERB, that were not taken off when the funds were given after community members received calls and letters from the Canadian Revenue Agency asking community members to pay those fees. While they gave him a “sad story,” he noticed a brand new big-screen TV in the house.
He says they haven’t paid their water bill or their rent, leaving him so far about $20,000 in the hole.
He’s tried to get a virtual hearing with the LTB for non-payment of rent since last April and hasn’t even been given a date yet. Two weeks ago, LTB officials said he’s eligible for an “accelerated” meeting date.
He said he’s yet to get that date.
Another tenant family, he said, collected CERB, didn’t pay their rent and “left of their own accord” at the end of August, leaving him with $16,000 in rent owing and $15,000 in damages. David said he’s since fixed up the house and rented it. ....
