CT librarians praise decision to remove some Dr. Seuss books

Amid controversy over the discontinuation of six Dr. Seuss books due to insensitive imagery, a number of educators and librarians across Connecticut emphasized the importance of having children see themselves represented in picture books and the harm of perpetuating stereotypes in children’s literature.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the business that oversees Theodor Seuss Geisel’s estate, announced earlier this week that it would cease publication and licensing of six books. The titles include “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” (1937), “If I Ran the Zoo” (1950), and four other publications. The company said the decision was made last year, following discussions with experts and educators and a review of Geisel’s works. ....

The purpose of the award is to recognize an innovative creative instructional lesson that integrates subject content with school library learning standards and technology.
For the past four years, the second grade students at the school have taken a virtual field trip from the school’s library to California to learn about the Watts Towers built by Simon Rodia, who is its creator. ....

Jointly sponsored by the Connecticut LIbrary Association and the Connecticut Association of School Librarians, the Intermediate Nutmeg Award encourages students in grades four to six to read quality literature. Each year the Nutmeg Selection Committee invites 6th and 7th graders to apply to be one of only two or three student readers from around the state. These literary students are tasked with reading about 120 books in nine months and helping choose the top ten nominees that are announced each spring.
Country School 6th Graders Olafur Scott of Haddam Neck and Elizabeth Rogers of Madison submitted applications. Pamela Dear and Rebecca Anderson, 2023 Intermediate Selection Committee Co-Chairpersons, noted that Scott s and Rogers remarkable dedication and scholarship set them apart from the other applicants.
