Stonington The Connecticut Commission on Women, Children, Seniors, Equity and Opportunity recognized Lisa Konicki, the president of the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce last week with its SHero Award for her extensive efforts to assist the struggling business community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
State Rep. Greg Howard, R-Stonington, had nominated Konicki, who also heads the Ocean Community Chamber Foundation, for the award.
The commission specifically wrote that when the pandemic began in March 2020, many business owners, employees, residents, and the community at large quickly grew anxious.
Immediately, Lisa emerged and began with a Community Strong campaign reminding residents that as unsure as tomorrow was, their community would always stick together. She led with support of local businesses through monetary grants, donated equipment to meet guidelines, and marketing campaigns to generate revenue for tho ....

More than 70 years ago, a husband-and-wife team of psychologists conducted experiments about children’s attitudes toward race using dolls that were identical in every way except skin color. Kenneth and Mamie Clark said the tests showed that children of all races and skin colors assigned positive attributes to the white dolls.
Connecticut legislators this week discussed these so-called “doll tests” from the 1940s in noting that too little has changed since the experiments were conducted. Sen. Marilyn Moore, a Bridgeport Democrat, said, indeed, a legislative staffer recently heard from a young woman whose employer admonished her to hide her braids under a hat. Members of the legislature s Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee heard testimony on Tuesday from Connecticut students, advocates and legislators on a bill that would require college campuses to conduct anonymous sexual misconduct surveys every two years.
The proposed legislation, H.B. 6374, would enable colleges to collect information about sexual violence incidents on campus. It also would establish a council, with appointed members ranging from students to higher education officials, that will be required to submit a report about the surveys to the General Assembly every two years. ....
