For now, all COVID-19 vaccinations coming into Barton County are funneled through the Health Department, County Administrator Phil Hathcock said. This includes those administered during the county’s drive-through events and those given at local hospitals.
Hathcock said the county’s first priority is its weekly clinics. Should the Health Department receive excess doses, they are allocated to health-care providers. ....

Barton County vaccinations continue March 3
As of the end of last week, there have been 4,314 first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered through the Barton County Health Department, according to County Administrator Phil Hathcock.
Another drive-through vaccination clinic is planned for Wednesday, March 3. As before, vaccines will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis at the Expo III grounds west of Great Bend. Booster doses for individuals who received their first dose on or before Feb. 3 will be administered from 9 a.m. to noon. First doses will be available starting at 2 p.m. These are available to persons aged 65 years or older, people who live in congregate settings and high-contact critical workers as outlined in Phase 2 of the Governor’s plan. ....

Man dies after drowning in Walnut Creek

A rural Great Bend man died of an accidental drowning Wednesday morning northwest of Great Bend after tumbling down an embankment into a creek, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.
At about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a location on the Wet Walnut Creek near 387 NW 40th Rd., northwest of Great Bend. 911 had received a call of an unresponsive individual in the water at that location after a family member had called to report they had located Manuel Castillo, age 20, in the creek, the sheriff said. ....
