Women’s Lacrosse Bows Out in Quarterfinals
Ottawa, Kan.– The women’s lacrosse tournament for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference had quarterfinal action going on Saturday. William Penn tried to take down Ottawa but the team struggled to find goals, especially in the second half. The Braves made the Statesmen pay for every mistake and the home side motored to a 15-3 victory. WPU falls to 6-8 overall as the loss will conclude the team’s season.
The Braves controlled the game after the opening draw, as they got the first couple of shots away. The home side hounded the navy and gold defenders as they tried to bring the ball up the field, giving them few passing lanes to work with. With a couple of turnovers, the Statesmen never got a clear and that resulted in the opening goal for Ottawa coming just two and a half minutes into the game. Victory in the Quarterfinals as WPU Tops MBU
Oskaloosa The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse tournament got going Saturday with four games across the bracket. William Penn hit the road to face Missouri Baptist, who won the first meeting of the season 10-7. The Statesmen entered in good form and changed the second stanza against the Spartans in St. Louis, as WPU secured a 9-6 victory to punch their ticket to the semifinals. William Penn is now 9-7 on the season.
With good weather on hand, the game started in favor of the hosts. Just past 90 seconds in, the Spartans beat Jeremy Smith (Sr., Camano Island, Wash., Sociology) on the opening shot to take the lead. However, the squad would not trail for long. After a faceoff win by (Fr., Boise, Idaho, Industrial Technology), the navy and gold got their offense to work. William Penn Muscles Past Saint Mary
Oskaloosa William Penn men’s lacrosse completed the home double header against Saint Mary (Kan.) Saturday with a victory. With a torrent of goals in the first quarter, the Statesmen cruised to a 19-5 win over the Spires. The victory brings the record for the navy and gold up to 6-6 overall and 4-3 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, the first time the program has held a winning conference record in its short history.
William Penn wasted little time getting on the board, with Brady Treloar (Fr., Portland, Ore., Business Management) lifting a good pass from behind the net to Collin Baliva (Fr., St. Louis, Mo.). Baliva took a couple steps and lashed his shot into the net to put the home side ahead 1-0 just 56 seconds in. Just shy of a minute later, Noah George (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) strode into the attacking end and unleased some high heat past the USM goalie to make it 2-0.
