'Rebel Hearts' an inspiring look into history of influential LA sisters

Pedro Kos s new documentary, Rebel Hearts, which premiered to a sold-out audience last month at the 2021 virtual Sundance Film Festival, recounts the story of the Immaculate Heart of Mary sisters in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. Director Kos, who is a Catholic, and producer Judy Korin, using extensive archival footage, clever animation and numerous commentators, recount the story of this community during the tumultuous years of Vatican II (1962-1965) until today.
Much of the film s focus, however, centers on the 1960s, when the reputation of the sisters was at its highest. ....

As the Second Vatican Council ended in 1965, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary decided to take up the council s call for renewal. Over the next few years, the sisters carefully and purposefully crafted a list of changes they wanted to take.
They had no idea that path would force them to choose between bowing to church hierarchy or leaving religious life.
But that was the decision they faced in December 1969, when the 560 sisters voted on whether to submit to the demands of Los Angeles Cardinal James McIntyre that they stop their transformation. Disobeying the cardinal, the Vatican said, would mean asking for dispensation from their vows and returning to the laity. ....

Last month, the City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission recommended that the City Council designate the former print studio of Sister Mary Corita Kent, the “Pop Art Nun,” as an Historic-Cultural Monument thus ending the year with a ray of hope.

“Southland Sessions” spoke with five different people about how they shifted the focus of their creative organization to keep afloat in 2020 and best serve their community.
