Right to life cannot depend on the will of the mother - Life Network Foundation

The fundamental right to life is enshrined in the Constitution and cannot depend solely on the will of the mother, Life Network Foundation have said in a statement voicing strong opposition to a bill proposing the decriminalisation of abortion.
“Maltese law also recognises the unborn child as a recipient of certain civil rights. This bill will be causing an inconsistency between criminal and civil law, as well as going against the Embryo Protection Act, which protects human life from conception, at its early stage,” the NGO said in a statement.
This week, independent MP Marlene Farrugia presented a bill to Parliament that proposes decriminalising abortion, meaning women who procure abortions will no longer face the possibility of jail-time.  ....

Pro-life lobby dubs Farrugia law ‘blatant attempt to introduce abortion’
Life Network Foundation says decriminalisation of three-year jail for women who terminate pregancy, was declaration that makes abortion permissible

Malta’s pro life lobby Life Network Foundation has called MP Marlene Farrugia’s bid to decriminalise penalties for women and medical professionals who terminate pregancies, as “a blatant attempt to introduce abortion into Malta, allowing every pregnancy to be terminated by a mother or medical professional, and the baby in the womb destroyed.”
Life Network said it strongly objected to the bill proposing the decriminalization of abortion, arguing that decriminalisation of an act “is a declaration that the act is permissible, and worse still, acceptable.” ....

Testing embryos for genetic disorder before implantation

The sweeping changes to the Embryo Protection Act in 2018 enabled in-vitro fertilisation to be unshackled from some of the constraints introduced six years earlier.
The changes allowed doctors to be able to fertilise up to five eggs instead of only two, increasing the chances of success. They also made embryo freezing an integral part of the treatment process.
But government was very careful back then to steer clear from introducing pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) on embryos in those cases where prospective parents carry the risk of transmitting a hereditary disease or genetic disorder to their child.
In parliament, several government MPs at the time made it a point to emphasise that PGD will not be on offer. ....

President George Vella non-committal over embryo testing

President George Vella non-committal over embryo testing
Genetic testing of IVF embryos may encounter presidential resistance

by Kurt Sansone
President George Vella has remained non-committal as to whether he will sign into law a Bill introducing genetic testing of embryos produced by in-vitro fertilisation.
“We will cross the bridges when we come to them,” a spokesperson told MaltaToday when asked whether the President had any moral objections to pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and whether he will refuse to sign the law.
Any act of parliament requires the President’s signature to become law and refusal to do so could create a constitutional crisis. ....
