Christmas cheer to go on at Edmonton Convention Centre

EDMONTON
Christmas is coming to the Edmonton Convention Centre.
Agencies have organized a Christmas Day lunch and turkey dinner for those using the temporary shelter.
Gifts comprised of socks, mittens and donated baked goods will also be distributed.
I think everybody deserves to feel connection and support on any given day, and Christmas especially, said Scarlet Bjornson with the Bissel Centre.
The celebration will include a showing of A Christmas Carol and cultural programming including Indigenous drummers and a prayer service.
Boyle Street Community Services, The Mustard Seed and the Bissel Centre are excited to offer a warm meal to anyone in need this Christmas. ....

Christmas Day celebrations going ahead at homeless shelter in Edmonton Convention Centre

Partners at the Edmonton Convention Centre are celebrating Christmas this year despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The temporary shelter opened in late October. The centre has access to showers, laundry, ceremonial support for Indigenous peoples, regular meals and sleeping spots, among other support services.
Although holiday celebrations will look a bit different this year, there will special meals and gifts to mark the occasion.
[We ll have] a Christmas lunch service as well as a traditional turkey meal for the evening and volunteers will be handing out gifts to each participant that is on site and so that ll be a bag of essential items socks, mittens and additional things they might need, some baked goods donated by local bakeries, said Scarlet Bjornso ....

Edmonton Convention Centre executive chef Serge Belair wouldn’t be anywhere else on Christmas Day than in the kitchen preparing upwards of 600 meals for homeless residents staying at the 24-7 shelter.
Belair and his team are preparing to make a traditional tourtière for lunch and a turkey dinner on Friday to bring the holiday spirit to people spending Christmas at the newly-named Tipinawaw shelter at the convention centre, meaning sheltered from the outside elements in Cree.
