Sean Murphy was a Mountie for 37 years and a local coroner for years after that. Yet even he is astonished at how quickly Canadians have become comfortable with obliging health-care workers to perform medically-assisted homicide.
“We’ve all suddenly become blasé about compelling people to be parties to killing other people,” Murphy says from his home in Powell River, B.C. “Polite society doesn’t want to talk about it.”
The silence, he says, is following the exact pattern established around abortion from the 1969 change to the Criminal Code through the 1988 Morgentaler decision, and then the campaign beginning in 2006 to compel doctors to refer for the procedure. ....

Euthanasia only for the dying, commission confirms

Voluntary assisted dying laws may be further delayed, after the Queensland Law Reform Commission suggested it may not make its new May reporting date for draft legislation.
The Queensland Law Reform Commission has released its review update as it drafts voluntary assisted dying legislation to be voted on later this year, giving some insight on the complex matters it is wading through.
In a further blow to Premier Annastacia s Palaszczuk s already broken promise to introduce legislation by February 2021, QLRC chair Justice Peter Applegarth said his team had been very busy but a large body of work remains to be done . ....

OTTAWA The federal government was granted one more month Thursday to expand access to medical assistance in dying even as its efforts to do so stalled in the House of Commons.
Quebec Superior Court Justice Martin Sheehan agreed to give the government a fourth extension until March 26 to bring the law into compliance with a 2019 court ruling.
But he suggested this will be the last one.
Given that the government is close to finally reforming Canada s assisted-dying law, Sheehan said it is appropriate to grant a final extension to allow it to end. ....

Sarina mum's last days were 'soul destroying'

A former Sarina resident whose dying mother asked her to put a pillow over her face has welcomed a Mackay politician s stance on voluntary assisted dying.
Vicky Crichton watched her mum Brenda Bartlem-Ward s weight drop from 100kg to just 38kg in her final months of life.
For someone who was so vibrant and happy - watching her fade every day was just heartwrenching, Ms Crichton said.
She would be in a wheelchair looking at a fish tank with no light in her eyes.
It was soul destroying.
Refusing to eat or take medication despite being in excruciating pain, Ms Crichton s mum begged anyone who would listen to please, end my life . ....
