A former Sarina resident whose dying mother asked her to put a pillow over her face has welcomed a Mackay politician s stance on voluntary assisted dying.
Vicky Crichton watched her mum Brenda Bartlem-Ward s weight drop from 100kg to just 38kg in her final months of life.
For someone who was so vibrant and happy - watching her fade every day was just heartwrenching, Ms Crichton said.
She would be in a wheelchair looking at a fish tank with no light in her eyes.
It was soul destroying.
Refusing to eat or take medication despite being in excruciating pain, Ms Crichton s mum begged anyone who would listen to please, end my life . ....

Irish Bishops urge parliament to reject Dying with Dignity bill
The Bishops of Ireland are calling on political leaders to reject the so-called “Dying with Dignity Bill 2020”.

The Irish Bishops’ have expressed their opposition to a new bill that provides for people with progressive terminal illness to decide the timing of their own death and seek assistance to end their lives under controlled and monitored circumstances. The so-called Dying with Dignity Bill 2020 was introduced in the Oireachtas Éireann (Irish Parliament) last year and is presently under scrutiny.
A long and detailed Submission presented this week to the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, the Council for Life and the Consultative Group on Bioethics of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ICBC), points out that, although it does not use the term “suicide” the Bill “is essentially about making provision for a person who wishes to end his or her life, to make a form ....

A professor and euthanasia advocate who was found guilty of multiple murders in South Africa has been censured for not disclosing details of murder charges to New Zealand s Medical Council.
Sean Davison, who formerly worked as a registered lab scientist in Dunedin, failed to disclose to the Medical Council about his involvement in two of the three murders when he applied for registration in New Zealand. ....

OTTAWA Canada’s Senate will give its verdict on the federal government’s effort to make it easier for Canadians to legally commit suicide with the help of a doctor by the end of the day Feb. 17.
Senators agreed Feb. 8 to debate Bill C-7 “according to the following themes”: mental illness and degenerative illness, safeguards and advance requests, vulnerable and minority groups, health care (including palliative care) and access to medical assistance in dying (MAiD) and conscience rights.
The senators agreed the Feb. 17 sitting “shall not be adjourned before the Senate has decided upon the bill at third reading.” ....
